Matilda Kennedy slams Women’s World Cup refereeing

first_imgAfter being sent off in Australia’s Round of 16 loss to Norway at the Women’s World Cup, Matildas centre-back Alanna Kennedy has hit out at the standard of refereeing at the tournament. Kennedy was shown a straight red card in extra time on Sunday to the shock of fans and players alike.VAR did review the incident but the defender was still given her marching orders for a challenge she clearly believes didn’t warrant a red card. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? “I felt at the time that my body was in front of hers and it was more or less a 50/50 and as a striker you go down and milk it a little bit,” Kennedy said post-match. “But the decision is what it is and the girls did really well to get us into penalties and that shows the character in our team and we will come back from this.”Though Norway wouldn’t capitalise on Kennedy’s dismissal as they triumphed on penalties, Australia were on the wrong end of a number of calls – including a decision to overturn a penalty that was initially awarded to them.Exiting France earlier than many expected, Kennedy believes the officiating didn’t do the Matildas any favours. “I think there needs to be a lot more clarity around the decisions of the referees,” she said. “I think it’s been questionable throughout the whole tournament, and that’s not the way we want to play.”We feel disappointed, we feel we had more potential and our tournament is cut short.”As the green and gold ultimately lost the match against Norway on penalties, Kennedy revealed she was unable to watch the game from the locker room after being sent off.”It was very difficult – I couldn’t get the game up on the TV,” she said. “I was just pacing around I guess. I had full belief in the girls that they would get through.”I am really proud of them for gritting it out and at least get to penalties. When you get to penalties anything can happen and that’s a bit of luck. “I am so proud of them for the fight we showed throughout the whole tournament and we showed a lot of character. Maybe we didn’t play our best football, but the character and mentality within our team is admirable and I am happy to be part of this team.”last_img read more

Neal announced tonight he will be transferring to Vanderbilt.247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong first reported news of Neal’s decision. Louisville was also in pursuit of the MAC standout.Neal will look to replace Vandy four-year starter Kyle Shurmur, who is graduating.“They obviously were in the market for a quarterback, I was looking for a school that needed a quarterback,” Neal told Wiltfong. “I went there and visited with their staff and saw everything and it was a good fit.“They have a lot of guys returning. Their team has some good players that have a year left. Their quarterback situation, you’re not going to go anywhere where they’re going to tell you it’s a lock but they don’t have a ton of guys on their roster and they’re graduating their starter.”Injuries limited Neal to three games in 2017 and nine games this year. He completed 194 of 335 passes for 1,917 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions in 2018.For his career at Ball State, Neal completed 60 percent of his passes, throwing for 7,393 yards, 46 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.Ball State finished the 2018 season with a 4-8 record.last_img read more

What Justin Herbert’s Decision Means For Dwayne Haskins

(Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)The biggest news in college football today is the decision by Oregon’s Justin Herbert to return for his senior season. Herbert was projected to be the top quarterback off the board in the 2019 NFL Draft. With Herbert coming back to school, the herd of an already-slim quarterback class is thinned some more. His announcement is bad news for NFL teams needing a quarterback, but good news for one potential draft entry.Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins has been rocketing up draft boards with his performance this fall. There were many who thought Haskins would be a top-10 pick in 2019 if he came out, even if Herbert was in the draft.Well, with Herbert remaining a Duck, Haskins is now the clear-cut No. 1 quarterback in the 2019 class, assuming he leaves school early.Herbert staying in school might make Dwayne Haskins leaving OSU a near lock. Potential QB1 and top 10 pick.— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) December 26, 2018Haskins has said recently he is focusing on Ohio State’s upcoming Rose Bowl game against Washington. He’ll announce his NFL decision after that.At this point, it seems like a formality that he will forego his final two seasons and turn pro.Outside of Haskins, Missouri’s Drew Lock, Duke’s Daniel Jones and West Virginia’s Will Grier should also merit long looks from NFL teams.last_img read more

The Field For The National Title Game Monday Appears To Have Major Issues

(Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)This Monday, Alabama and Clemson will meet with a national title on the line for the third time in four years. It looks like the field the two teams will be playing on could be a factor in the outcome. This year’s contest will take place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The field for the contest appears to have major issues – and it was on display on Monday night.Oregon and Michigan State played a 7-6 game that featured players slipping all over the field. One reporter – Matt Prehm of 247 Sports – snapped a photo of what the turf looks like.A few weeks back, Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll had some harsh words about the field. Here’s what he told The Mercury News:“It wasn’t great. There were guys slipping all over the place and you could see guys in pass protection, you could see guys on field goal protection sticking their cleats in the ground and it was moving. It’s the same on both sides of the ball, though. They’re subject to the same turf that we are, so there’s no reason to complain about it,” said Carroll, complaining about it.It’ll be interesting to see how the field condition affects the game plans for both teams. It’s unclear which team it favors. The national championship will be played here at Levi Stadium in 7 days. It has chunks of mixed, uneven grass like this all over. Injury Update For Georgia Star RB D’Andre Swift

first_img According to Seth Emerson of The Athletic, Swift didn’t show any obvious limitations when he was on the field. In all likelihood, Georgia’s coaching staff is taking precautionary measures with its star running back.Georgia practice observations:– D’Andre Swift out there today, no obvious limitations, though our time viewing practice was short.– Ben Cleveland was getting some first-team RG reps.– Nate McBride and Tyrique Stevenson, who had missed some practices, both back out there.— Seth Emerson (@SethWEmerson) August 15, 2019Swift showcased his versatility last season, finishing with 1,346 scrimmage yards and 13 total touchdowns.Georgia lost a few playmakers to the 2019 NFL Draft, such as Riley Ridley, Mecole Hardman and Elijah Holyfield. It’ll be on Jake Fromm and Swift – if he’s healthy – to lead the Bulldogs on offense this season. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)D’Andre Swift missed part of the Georgia Bulldogs’ workout on Tuesday, which raised concerns about his health. The star running back has dealt with a few injuries thus far in his career. With the season opener roughly two weeks away for the Bulldogs, the offense is hopeful that Swift will be at full strength. However, there is no indication that he’ll necessarily be ready to take his No. 1 role in the backfield. On Thursday, Swift returned to the practice for Georgia. He wasn’t taking on the responsibilities of the lead running back, though.Instead, senior Brian Herrien was the first tailback going through drills. This speaks more to the health status of Swift than it does his spot on the depth chart.last_img read more

IPL 2019 first month will be crucial for World Cup selection: BCCI official

first_imgIPL 2019 first month will be crucial for World Cup selection: BCCI officialA senior BCCI official has said the first month of IPL 2019 starting March 23 will be keenly followed by the selectors as they are expected to announce the squad for the World Cup around April 20.advertisement Indo-Asian News Service New DelhiMarch 19, 2019UPDATED: March 19, 2019 10:24 IST Ajinkya Rahane will be hoping to seal a spot in the World Cup squad with good performances in IPL 2019 (@ajinkyarahane88 Photo)HIGHLIGHTSVirat Kohli had earlier said IPL 2019 performances won’t influence selection for World CupConsidering the doubts around a few spots in the Indian team, the selectors are willing to consider IPL performancesIPL 2019 will kickstart with Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 23Going into the last ODI series before the upcoming World Cup — against Australia — India skipper Virat Kohli had said that Indian players’ performance in the IPL wouldn’t have any bearing with selection in the squad for the showpiece event. But with none of the batsmen managing to secure the No.4 slot post the five ODIs against the Aussies, the players’ performance in the IPL will have a bearing on the minds of the selectors when they pick the squad for the World Cup mid-April.The four primary contenders for the No.4 slot are Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu, Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul. And it all now boils down to a consistent showing in the first half of the cash-rich T20 league. A good run here and one of these four will be rewarded with a ticket to England.Speaking to IANS, a senior BCCI official said that recent performances have meant that the first month of the 12th edition of the IPL will have to be looked into when MSK Prasad and his team sit down to pick the squad for the World Cup.”With all the chopping and changing and experimentation and recent performances of the team, the No.4 slot is not yet sealed and if you ask me, a couple of other positions are also open since some players have not developed as well as one hoped over the last year. With the team selection slated for around April 20, the first month of the IPL will be crucial for the team selection for the World Cup,” the official said.advertisementTeam management looking at four batsmen for one slotEchoing the sentiments, a source in the team management said that there are technically four batsmen who will be fighting it out for the slot and a good IPL for one of them will definitely make that player a favourite to seal the position.”It was thought that the Australia series would help cement all spots for the World Cup. But that hasn’t happened and technically you now have four batsmen fighting for the No.4 slot. In fact, coach Ravi Shastri has even spoken of the option of having Kohli at 4, but that then depends on conditions and match situation. He won’t go into the tournament as India’s no.4,” the source told IANS.Rahane and Iyer confident of strong show in IPL 2019Interestingly, both Rahane and Iyer are ready for the challenge and feel that a good show in the IPL will definitely make them contenders for that No.4 spot that has had players coming in and going out without consistent success.”The approach won’t be any different with the World Cup spot looming because at the end you are playing cricket, be it the IPL or any other tournament. You have to score runs and do well for the team. The most important thing will be to think about the Rajasthan Royals rather than thinking too much about the road ahead. If I do well in the IPL, the World Cup (slot) will automatically come. I feel it is important to express yourself and not take any undue pressure thinking about things which aren’t in your control. The focus is the IPL,” Rahane told IANS.Iyer said that he too was confident of the selectors noticing a good show in the IPL.”In IPL, if I get a great start then it could really impact the selections. Selectors will be thinking twice about me. That’s what I am really looking forward to. But I have been doing well in all formats, not just IPL. So definitely this IPL they will be looking. Gagan Khoda spoke to me and said that I have been doing well and asked me to keep up the consistency,” he added. Also Read | IPL 2019: Virat not a shrewd captain, can’t compare him with Dhoni and Rohit, says GambhirAlso Read | Virat Kohli begins IPL 2019 preparations with Royal Challengers BangaloreAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. India vs Pakistan (IND vs PAK), World Cup 2019 Match 22: Prediction and Probable Playing 11s

first_imgIndia vs Pakistan (IND vs PAK), World Cup 2019 Match 22: Prediction and Probable Playing 11sKicker: India vs Pakistan (IND vs PAK) Playing 11 Prediction: As India face Pakistan at Old Trafford on June 16, they would look to maintain their 6-match winning streak in World Cups against the Asian giants.advertisement India Today Web Desk ManchesterJune 16, 2019UPDATED: June 16, 2019 11:38 IST India vs Pakistan (IND vs PAK) Playing 11 Prediction (Twitter/@BCCI)On a lovely Sunday morning, India and Pakistan will clash against each other at Old Trafford cricket stadium in Manchester on Sunday to reignite the biggest rivalry of the game. But is the hype around the game being too much? Well, no, if you get to know there were 400,000 applications for match tickets between India and Pakistan, and the numbers means they “could have packed out Wembley four times over”.Recent form:It would not be wrong to say that Pakistan is one of the most inconsistent and unpredictable teams of the tournament. They were stunned in their first game by West Indies in what was a batting collapse for the side but came back strong to produce an all-round performance to topple tournament favourites England to break their 12-match losing streak in ODIs.However, they failed to take that form against Australia to get defeated by 41 runs.India on the other hand are No. 2 ODI team in the ICC rankings for a reason as they have won both their matches — against South Africa and Australia to remain undefeatable in the tournament so far.Pitch and weather conditions:The pitch is flat, which means the bowlers should not expect much from it. There is not a tinge of green and the batsmen would look to get their best scores here. The team who wins the toss first is likely to win the match as well. The weather has been pleasant in Manchester since the last couple of days but its supposed to mostly cloudy, with some showers during the afternoon time.advertisementMatch Prediction:Tracing the World Cup history suggest India are going to win the game hands down as in their last 6 encounters they have remained undefeatable. Also, India has won five of those tosses and of course, all six games. It was only in Centurion (2003) that India chased after losing the toss and the match turned out to be a close contest.IND vs PAK: Predicted Playing 11sGoing with the pitch conditions, India is likely to play Mohammad Shami in what would be a debut match for him at this World Cup. While Shadab Khan who was made to sit out against Australia, is expected to return in the Pakistan side.India (probable): Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli (c), Vijay Shankar, MS Dhoni (wk), Kedhar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammad Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit BumrahPakistan (probable): Imam-ul-Haq, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Sarfaraz Ahmed (c & wk), Haris Sohail, Shoaib Malik/Asif Ali/Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Mohammad AmirAlso Read | India vs Pakistan, World Cup 2019: Will June 16 witness the most-watched match in cricket history? Also Read | India vs Pakistan: Mohammad Amir inspired by memory of late mother ahead of Manchester tieAlso SeeFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Leclerc is 107 points behind the British driver.Max Verstappen finished fourth ahead of Red Bull team-mate Alex Albon, who started last after he crashed out during qualifying.Ferrari had already got themselves into a needless mess before Vettel retired with an engine failure on lap 28.Vettel got the jump on pole-sitter Leclerc on the long drag down to the second corner but a curious pre-race arrangement had Leclerc calling for the roles to be reversed. It appears that the team had agreed that if Vettel benefited from Leclerc’s slipstream and moved ahead of the Frenchman off the start line, he would have to concede the position.Ferrari were on the radio to tell Vettel to let Leclerc by, but the four-time world champion resisted the order.Leclerc protested over the radio.”You put me behind and I respected everything,” he said. “We will talk later.”The Ferrari pit wall were on to Vettel again, but again the German refused to let his teammate pass, fearing that he would be exposed to Hamilton in third place if he slowed down.advertisementLeclerc was the first to stop on lap 22, but instead of calling in Vettel the next time around Vettel was left on old tires as his teammate put in several fast laps on his fresh tires.Four laps after Leclerc pitted, Vettel was eventually called in and by the time he emerged he had fallen behind his teammate and into second place.Just moments later disaster struck as Vettel broke down with an engine failure. It was then to get worse for the Scuderia. With Vettel’s broken down machine in a precarious position, the virtual safety car was deployed to slow down the field, allowing Hamilton, who had yet to pit, a free stop for tires and the lead of the race.Leclerc, meanwhile, declined to blame the team or his teammate for the mid-race drama.”I will always trust the team but the tactic was me giving the slipstream and for us to be one-two, which happened, but then I don’t know. I need to speak to the team to know the situation better.”Standing in the drivers’ championshipLewis Hamilton 322Valtteri Bottas 249Charles Leclerc 215Max Verstappen 212Sebastian Vettel 194Also Read | Russian GP: Charles Leclerc emulates Michael Schumacher with 4th pole in a rowAlso Read | Great job, really happy for you: Hamilton congratulates Vettel for Singapore GP winFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. Virat Kohli as captain the most important man in Indian cricket: BCCI president Sourav Ganguly

first_img India Today Web Desk MumbaiOctober 23, 2019UPDATED: October 23, 2019 15:04 IST Ganguly considers Kohli as the most important man in Indian cricket right now (Getty Images)HIGHLIGHTSSourav Ganguly took charge as BCCI President on WednesdayGanguly termed India as the best team in the world at the momentGanguly also said that that he will meet Virat Kohli on October 24New BCCI president Sourav Ganguly who took charge of his new role on Wednesday, tried to shift the focus from himself while terming India captain Virat Kohli as the ‘most important man’ in the country as far as cricket sphere is concerned. Holding his maiden press conference after assuming his new role, Ganguly reiterated that he will sit down with Kohli and support him in taking the country’s cricket forward.”I will speak to him tomorrow. He is the captain of India. He is the most important man in Indian cricket. I look at that way. We will support him in every way. He wants to make this team the best in the world. It’s a great team… the way they have been a fantastic side with the way they have played their cricket in the last 3-4 years. Yes, you can say they haven’t won the World Cup but you don’t win World Cups every time. Hopefully, we will support whatever he wants and ensure Indian cricket moves forward smoothly,” said Ganguly. On relationship with Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri”I don’t what transpired with the CoA, Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri. Now with the new office bearers taking over, it will be properly discussed, there will be a mutual discussion. But be rest assured, we are here to make their life easier and not difficult. Everything will be based on performance. Performance is the most important thing and that’s what will decide the future of Indian cricket. As I said, Virat Kohli is the most important man in this context. We will be there to support him. We will listen to him. I have been a captain myself and I understand from that position. It’s mutual respect which will be there. Opinions will be there, discussions will be there and we will do what is best for Indian cricket,” added Ganguly.advertisementSourav Ganguly arrived at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Wednesday for the AGM. Notably, Ganguly filed his nomination for the role of BCCI president after the eleventh-hour drama earlier this month. He has been elected unopposed as the president of richest body in world cricket.Ganguly is likely to serve only 9 months as BCCI president as the “Cooling-Off” period clause in the new BCCI constitution makes it mandatory for board officials to step down after 6 years in office. Ganguly, who played 113 Tests and 311 one-day internationals and led India to 21 Test wins, has already been an administrator for his home state association, Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).Sourav Ganguly is only the 2nd India cricketer after Maharaja of Vizianagaram to don the role of BCCI president. The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06: The first true American supercar

first_img The Ultimate Pillow Guide: The 6 Best Pillows for All Sleepers There are a few monuments moments in American history: signing of the declaration of independence, the moon landing, and the unveiling of the 2015 Corvette Z06 here in Detroit. If you think I am overselling this debut, you might be right. If you have even a modicum of American pride pumping through your veins, you might well agree with me. Honestly, the now-unveiled Z06 is already a thing of legend and stamp on the history books.HighlightsLet’s start with the highlights – and one I think perfectly encapsulates the adroitness of the Z06. When fitted with the Z07 package, the Z06 – even during preliminary testing – has already recorded some of the fastest lap times ever for a Corvette, surpassing even the last-gen ZR1. Let that sink in for a second. How has it bested its older brother? It’s the first Z06 model to offer a supercharger. That’s right; Chevy wedged the all-new 6.2-liter LT4 V8 under the hood that makes over 625 horsepower and 635 pound-feet of torque. Backing that up is either a seven-speed manual or an all-new eight-speed automatic developed in-house by Chevrolet. Z06 grips the road like never before thanks to its downforce-inducing body. And oh what a body it is. Look at the damn thing. With that massive carbon fiber splitter, it looks like evil incarnate. I joked when we saw a teaser image of the Z06 that it was slathered in ‘combat yellow’ paint. Seeing the Z06 in its full livery is truly awe-inspiring. I’d say that, even with that yellow paint, the Z06 looks less combative than it does ominous. It draws you in with its razor-edge beauty but makes you a bit nervous for what’s in store for you behind the wheel.Muscle to the nth degreeChevrolet has made supercharged pushrod V8s for decades. None, however, is like the all-new 6.2-liter LT4.Engineers were able to fit the supercharger and intercooler down into the valley of the motor, making it only about an inch (25 mm) taller than the standard, naturally aspirated LT1 V8 that powers the Stingray. Amazingly, for as compact as it is, the LT1 makes 37 percent more horsepower and 40 percent more torque.Engineers didn’t just get tricky with the supercharger packaging; they also added cylinder deactivation, direct injection, and variable valve timing. The result is a hunk of American aluminum built in Tonawanda, New York that makes at least 625 hp and 635 lb-ft.Sending that power to the rear wheels is the standard seven-speed manual or the all-new 8L90 eight-speed automatic, which, as I mentioned before, was designed in-house by Chevrolet. Shifted manually with paddles behind the steering wheel, owners can enjoy the comfort of an auto without sacrificing the sportiness of on-demand shifting. Why did Chevy take on the challenge of making its own transmission? Simply, it couldn’t find an automatic that could handle the torque put out by the LT4 while also offering high-speed shifts. What does that look like in the real world, exactly? The 8L90 shifts up to eight-hundredths of a second faster at full throttle than the seven-speed dual clutch transmission in the new Porsche 911. When was the last time you thought you’d ever read about a Chevy out-doing a Porsche for precision?Don’t think that’s all the benefits offered by the 8L90. No, it also weighs eight pounds less than a six-speed automatic. Astonishing.DownforceYou know how some brand names become synonymous with a concept? Think about it, we don’t call them tissues; we call them Kleenex, which is a brand name. That same way, I think we ought to just start calling ‘downforce’ simply ‘Z07’. When the Z06 is fitted with the Z07 performance pack, it pushes the Michelin Sport Cup tires so feverishly into the pavement at high speed; it’s likely to tear up most track tarmac. When fitted with the Z07 package, which includes a carbon fiber front splitter with extended winglets and a see-through rear spoiler, the Z06 produces “the most amount of aerodynamic downforce of any production car that GM has tested.”In addition to the new front splitter and winglets, the Z06 also features a distinctive front fascia with a new mesh grille that not only looks menacing but also improves airflow over a blank opening. The Z06 designers explained this phenomenon to me like this: “It’s like the aerator on your faucet. Without it, water would just go every which way. Give it that disruption, and you can route it more efficiently.”It’s not just the front that’s been embiggened, the sides and rear-end of the Z06 are wider, too. The front wheel arches are 2.2 inches wider in the front and 3.15 inches winder in the rear. Designers stretched the rear fascia out to match, making the distinctive square taillights three inches further apart than they are on the Stingray.Stiff, open-top motoringWith the last Z06, buyers had to forgo open-top motoring in order to enjoy a rigid body structure. In the 2015 Z06, they won’t have to. Just like the Stingray, the Z06 will have a removable hardtop roof. Pop it out and the all-new Z06 will be an admirable 20 percent stiffer than the last-gen, fixed-roof model. Click the roof back I, though, and the new Z06 will be 60 percent stiffer than its processor. The C7 Corvette chassis is so firm and planted; it remained virtually unchanged in the C7.R racecar.American supercarI hope you now agree with me that the 2015 Corvette Z06 is not only an awe-inspiring Corvette, it’s carbon fiber nose to carbon fiber nose with number of European supercars that cost three times as much money.Ultimately, though, I can’t give my final diagnosis on the Z06 until I’ve driven it, which I hope will be later this year, as the 2015 Z06 goes on sale late this year. What do you think of the Z06? Florida’s Everglades National Park Is As Beautiful As It Is Expansive

first_imgThis year, the National Park Service has reached an incredibly impressive milestone, and celebrated one hundred years as an agency on August 25 of this year. To help the NPS continue celebrating its centennial, The Manual has devoted a regular column to highlighting one of its spectacular parks each month. In addition to providing general information on the regions themselves, we’ll also catch up with park rangers, area advocates, and anyone who contributes to the preservation and operation of each park. Enjoy!Park name: Everglades National Park (Florida)Area: 1,508,538 acresAuthorized: May 30, 1934Average annual visitors: 997,903As we crack a bottle of proverbial champagne on our inaugural NPS Centennial column, Florida’s expansive Everglades National Park is where we’ll venture to first. Encompassing roughly 1.5 million acres of Florida’s southern tip, the Everglades is a treasure trove for avid adventurers looking to explore the region’s eclectic ecosystems, tropical hammocks, and mangrove swamps. Due in part to the sprawling nature of the park itself, it remains one of the rare national attractions that deserves an extended amount of visitation time to even feel like you’re scratching the surface of what it offers. With its wet season lasting from April to November and a (more desirable) dry season lasting from November to March, Everglades National Park is a constantly shifting environment that offers visitors a dramatically different experience literally every month. To get a true barometer of how exactly the park lives and breathes, we chatted with Everglades National Park ranger, Maria Thomson and Everglades National Park Chief of Public Affairs, Linda Friar. What is your favorite part about being associated with the park?Maria Thomson: I think what I like best is just how much wilderness there is. I believe the Everglades is something like 85 percent wilderness; it just gives people so many different opportunities for activities. The way in which it constantly changes with the seasons is exhilarating. Whether it’s the dry or wet season, the wildlife and scenery change so much and offer much to be explored. It’s also great to see people visit from all over the world just to enjoy the park. Are there any unknown facts you’d share with first-time park goers?Linda Friar: Perhaps to venture off the main park road and look small. Most of the time when people visit the Everglades, they are overcome by how big it is. It’s incredibly important to just stop and be still, be amazed by what’s around. The park as a real subtle beauty to it.MT: Yeah, I’d agree with Linda. Look small and be aware of your surroundings. It’s incredibly interesting to stay off the beaten path. Just explore everything around you and have a sense of adventure. Why is Everglades National Park so important to you? MT: Aside from the fact I’ve been working here for so long and it feels like a part of me, I absolutely love how expansive everything is. Whether you have just a day to explore or you visit for an entire week, there’s so much to do to fill your time. It’s just a really special place.LF: I’d add to that and say that even people who come from all over the country, or the world, to visit the Everglades don’t even realize the park is just one small part of what makes it so great. So much of the wilderness and waterways that make up a large portion of the Everglades are as equally amazing as anything the parks have to offer. What’s so great about working for the park is having the ability to actively preserve it for future generations. All photos courtesy of the National Park Service Editors’ Recommendations To Find Beauty In Yosemite, Just Whip Out Your (Honda) Passport The Best Men’s Trail Running Gear for Warm Weather Book a Last-Minute Summer Camping Trip Just About Anywhere With Pitchup On the Road with Mikah Meyer, the First Person to Visit Every National Park Site in One Trip The Best Men’s Short-Sleeve Button-Downs Shirts Raise the Barlast_img read more

Cynar is the Artichoke-Based Spirit You Need to Know About

first_img Easy 3-Ingredient Cocktails You Can Master Editors’ Recommendations Cynar—pronounced chee-nar (not sigh-nar, chai-nar, or any of the other ways that the friend that always wants to be better than you has previously assured you of)—is an Italian amaro that is made with, among other 13 total herbs and botanicals, artichokes. The name Cynar comes from the botanical name for the artichoke, Cynar scolymus, and, since its creation in the 1950s by Venetian Angelo Dalle Molle, the spirit has been held in varying levels of esteem the world over. While it is made with artichoke leaves, Cynar is not an artichoke-flavored spirit (sorry, spinach and artichoke dip loving people out there). The overall flavor is bittersweet, making it somewhat easier to sip compared to other digestifs out there. When it comes to ABV, Cynar is on the lower side—a mere 16.5%–but if you are looking for the same flavor with a little more backbone, Cynar also has a 70-proof version (named, fittingly, Cynar 70 Proof) for your consumption.Below, we’re pulled together some of the best ways to enjoy Cynar. We’re big fans of it here at The Manual, and we think you will be, too.Drink it StraightAs with many amari, Cynar is best consumed—at least according to the Italians who first made it—straight. Pour yourself an ounce or two, and sip it. Adding an ice cube can’t hurt, either. Another fun thing to try with your straight Cynar is to add a few drops (3-4 is all you need) of saline solution. Just as with cooking, the salt will bring out the other flavors present in the spirit. If you want to extend your Cynar, you can also think about adding club soda, tonic water, or even orange juice, as they do in certain parts of Europe.Drink it in CocktailsCynar, especially in the last decade or so, has really come to be defined by its versatility in cocktails.  Here, you’ll see two different types of cocktail that both work to highlight how the bitter flavors of the liqueur work well with a variety of other ingredients.Cynar Julep 1 ½ oz Cynar1 oz Apple Cider½ oz Cinnamon Syrup¾ oz Lemon JuiceGinger BeerMethod: Mix Cynar, cider, cinnamon syrup, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker. How Steven Grasse Went from Mad Man to Distiller and Never Looked Back

first_img“I hate advertising and I hate everyone in it,” Steven Grasse, 52, says. When asked about the early stages of his career, it felt as though he was reliving some intense trauma. As a former ad-man and current small-batch liquor proprietor, Grasse couldn’t wait to be his own boss. At 23, he founded his own agency, then Gyro Worldwide, now Quaker City Mercantile, sparking an earth-shaking, two decades of evidently unsatisfying, advertising magic.“Once you get the account, you start losing it right away,” he laments. “It’s like renovating an apartment you don’t own.”At the helm of his agency, he sought permanence, investing in nearly invisible companies and pulling new ones out of thin air. Whether he was transforming Puma into a worldwide brand or revitalizing New England’s historic beer darling, Narragansett, Grasse was a force to be reckoned with.“I was most appreciative of his passion for rejecting the status quo,” says Lindsay Prociw, Category Director of Mixable Spirits at William Grant & Sons. As the Director of Innovation, she worked tirelessly with Grasse to put Hendrick’s Gin on the map. “His long history and experience [with Hendrick’s], combined with his thirst for staying modern and relevant in his interests…has made him someone I often go to directly for [perspective].”William Grant & Sons, needing a new gin and rum to add to its roster, approached Grasse. His rock ‘n roll sensibilities led to the rise of the whimsical Hendrick’s Gin and Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum. Grasse would later churn out Art in the Age, an experimental spirits and lifestyle brand catering to adventurous professional and amateur mixologists alike.A history buff above all else, Grasse’s love of Transcendentalism and disdain for advertising pushed him all the way into the spirits world. He essentially purchased the town of Tamworth, New Hampshire, lured there by its pure waters and history-steeped streets (Thoreau frequently summered there), and established the Tamworth Distilling. Though initially meeting some pushback from the locals (many of whom were alive during Prohibition), the distillery and its sprawling grounds has drawn many millennials to the rural locale and employed a bevy of local farmers.Blue Lion Chicorée Liqueur Tamworth Distilling“People want to know where their food comes from,” Grasse says. “But then they go home and order everything on Amazon.” He goes on to liken major tech corporations to “modern-day robber barons.” Though Grasse tries to capture the magic of Transcendentalist idols found in nature rather than industrialization, his penchant for pushing the envelope remains steadfast. With products like Von Humboldt’s Turmeric Cordial and Art in the Age’s Black Trumpet Blueberry Cordial, Tamworth Distillery piques the curiosity of even the most habitual drinkers, but it doesn’t stop there. One of Grasse’s favorite liquors is an Art in the Age Beet Root Vodka which almost tastes like horse manure, so “you know it’s real.” Tamworth distillers are also playing with ideas for fermented goat’s milk which “smells like a dirty sock but tastes like perfume.” You know, your dream drink.Make no mistake, Tamworth is Grasse’s baby (an Arkansas satellite is still gestating). Utterly committed to his vision and supporting the town it resides in, Grasse is primarily interested in the happiness of the individual. Whether that’s just him, Tamworth residents, or fans of his niche alcohol, you can be sure of one thing:“It’s not for sale.”Berry Basil Gimlet2 oz Art in the Age Black Trumpet Blueberry1 oz gin½ oz fresh lime juice½ oz honeyFresh basil leavesMethod: Muddle honey, basil, and lime juice in cocktail shaker.
