M.A.D’s Managing Director, Mark Temple, said: “Just over 70% of all the companies surveyed failed to register or optimize their website for the search engines. This is staggering considering that 80% of new visitors to websites go directly from one of the main search engines. Over half were unaware that it was necessary to subscribe to search engines at all, with the majority believing that just having a website will automatically include their site on search engines.” He added: “Some 43% spent less on their Internet Marketing Strategy over the last 12 months than they did on providing tea and coffee for their staff. It was therefore not surprising that 64% of those surveyed were unhappy with the results of their website and over 82% of receptionists took more than a minute to provide their website address, with 34% taking 2 minutes or more to provide the information!” Companies in the south of England are not investing in promoting their Web sites online. Are charities doing any better?Multimedia production company M.A.D Productions reports that small or medium size businesses spend more money on tea and coffee for their staff than they do on Internet marketing. The findings follow a six-month survey of 1,600 companies in the south of England.UK Fundraising wonders if charities as a whole are doing any better. BIL Director-General (2nd from left) with the Institute’s first graduating class following the ceremony on, Friday, October 11, 2019.The Banking Institute of Liberia (BIL) has graduated its first batch of students who were trained in regulatory framework and compliance, internal audit, system and controls and corporate risk management, among others.BIL was established in 2014 by the Liberia Bankers Association and the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), to provide cutting edge training and capacity building support to stakeholders in the banking and financial sector. The 130 pioneer candidates came from nine commercial banks, which included the CBL and one-micro-finance institution. In a remark, CBL Director of Financial Markets, Armazo Bawn, who served as the program’s guest speaker, told the graduates to use the skills acquired during training to become visionaries and solve the numerous challenges facing the banking sector.Mr. Bawn added that although the country is experiencing a severe economic crisis, the problems can be resolved if bankers become innovative.“As we journey through life, there are many challenges that we must overcome; you either overcome them or they will overcome you. Remember, when life chokes you, choke it back, it would soon find out that no one messes with you. Everyone complains about the hard times; certainly, we can learn something from the women’s battle cry, ‘women ooh women, women; don’t sit there, do something!’” Mr. Bawn told the graduates.“We are faced with the difficulties of everyday life; could this be an opportunity to do something new, whatever the economic conditions may be? We are not the first to experience such economic hardship. Let me say this to you, amid these difficulties, you have the power to control destiny with your mind; whatever you desire, so shall it be if you work towards it. You hold the key in the palm of your hand, use it,” Mr. Bawn said.Armazo Bawn, CBL Director of Financial Market, who served as Banking Institute of Liberia’s first convocation guest speaker.Mr Bawn further admonished the graduates that the greatest tragedy that will befall them is to walk out of BIL and lack vision.“Without a vision, you are just playing games with your life. You are a product of your choices. You will become the sum of the little choices in life. Not to decide is to decide not to,” he said. Also speaking at BIL’s graduation program was BIL Director-General, Assistant Professor Richard S. Panton, who said the journey to the institution’s first graduation has not been an easy task, but with courage and determination, they were able to make the difference.“Human capital development is essential for national growth and development in any society. This is because when there is highly skilled and trained manpower, the challenges facing the society can easily be overcome. Trained and highly skilled staffs can unravel complex problems in the environment. Additionally, the trained and skilled staff becomes more innovative in finding solutions to organizational problems as well as translating corporate policies into achievable action steps,” Mr. Panton said.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Walmart is getting bruised in its battle with online leader Amazon. The world’s largest retailer on Tuesday reported a smaller-than-expected fourth-quarter profit as it wrestled with slower e-commerce sales during the busiest time of the year. The results underscore the company’s challenges in a fiercely competitive retail landscape. Its stock took a beating, falling 10.2 per cent to post its biggest single-day percentage drop in 30 years. Its decline was a big factor in a drop of 1 per cent by the Dow Jones industrial average. The fourth-quarter profit numbers overshadowed the discounter’s better-than-expected sales at its established stores and higher customer traffic as online services linked to its stores attract more shoppers. The company’s mixed results raise concerns its push to narrow the gap between itself and Amazon.com Inc. may be losing steam. This despite it making huge investments in both its digital business and its stores, where it has taken steps like lowering prices.Walmart’s e-commerce sales growth in its U.S. business slowed to 23 per cent during the fourth quarter, a sharp decline from 50 per cent in the third quarter. It noted last year’s results got a big boost from its acquisition of online retailer Jet.com.But it also acknowledged its own mistakes — a surge of TVs, toys and electronics into its warehouses during the peak periods of the holiday season crowded out more basic items. Still, Walmart finished the year with more than 40 per cent growth in online sales in the U.S., and it expects that online sales will be revived this year to hit that same pace.Walmart and other retailers are looking at new ways to compete in light of swiftly changing shopping habits. Albertsons Cos., the owner of Safeway and other grocery brands, announced Tuesday it is buying the drugstore chain Rite Aid.Walmart itself is building fewer big stores and focusing on investments in its online business while beefing up benefits for its workers.Since buying Jet.com for more than $3 billion a year and a half ago, Walmart has added online services, acquired brands like Bonobos and ModCloth and vastly expanded the number of items available online. Walmart is also getting ready to launch an overhauled website with a focus on fashion and home furnishings. It has teamed up with Lord & Taylor to create dedicated space on its site.Walmart has aggressively cut prices and plans to double the number of stores where groceries can be ordered online and picked up curbside this year to 2,000 locations.“We’re accelerating innovation in the business to make shopping faster and easier for our customers,” said Walmart CEO Doug McMillon,But Walmart has a long way to get even close to Amazon’s online dominance. Amazon.com Inc. has leveraged its $99-a-year Prime membership program into intense loyalty from customers, and it’s recently stepped into Walmart’s turf, no longer content with only online sales. After spending $14 billion to acquire Whole Foods last summer, Amazon just announced two-hour delivery from the grocery chain for its members.Walmart Inc., based in Bentonville, Arkansas, earned $2.17 billion, or 73 cents per share, in the three-month period ended Jan. 31. That compares with $3.76 billion, or $1.22 per share, in the year-earlier period.Excluding charges, Walmart earned $1.33 per share. The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. Analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research were calling for earnings of $1.36 per share. The world’s largest retailer posted revenue of $136.27 billion, exceeding the average analyst estimate of $135.04 billion.Revenue at stores opened at least a year rose 2.6 per cent at its namesake U.S. stores. That marked the 14th consecutive quarter of increases. Customer counts rose 1.6 per cent.At Walmart’s Sam’s Clubs, same-store sales rose 2.4 per cent in the fourth quarter. The company announced earlier this month that it was offering free shipping for premium members and simplifying its membership tiers.Last month, Sam’s Club began closing 63 U.S. clubs while turning a dozen of them into warehouses for digital sales, with the goal of speeding up deliveries. The company said Tuesday that its federal corporate tax rate for the current year will be between 24 and 26 per cent due to the new tax reform. Walmart’s previous tax rate was 32.5 per cent. Walmart’s Chief Financial Officer Brett Biggs said that it expects a cash benefit of $2 billion for the year. Its shares ended Tuesday down $10.67 to $94.11, its biggest single-day drop in percentage terms since Jan. 8, 1988._____AP Health writer Tom Murphy in Indianapolis contributed to this report._____Follow Anne D’Innocenzio: http://twitter.com/ADInnocenzio
Islamabad: Pakistan’s military has said for the first time that JF-17 Thunder combat aircraft developed jointly with China were used in retaliation to India’s pre-emptive strikes on a JeM terror camp in Balakot as it once again denied that US-made F-16 jets were involved in the attack.Referring to the aerial dogfight with the Indian Air Force jets after the February 14 Pulwama terror attack claimed by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Pakistan Army spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor said the Indian jets violated the Pakistani airspace on February 26, dropping payloads without inflicting any casualties or damage to infrastructure. As regard to how to use F-16, in what context [they] were used or not – because at that point of time our entire Air Force was airborne – now it remains between Pakistan and the US to see how the MoUs regarding the use of F-16 have been adhered to or otherwise,” Ghafoor told Russian news agency Sputnik International. New Delhi had also underlined that electronic signatures captured by Indian radars had established the use of F-16 for the offensive. The US State Department announced that it was seeking more information from Pakistan on the potential use of American-made F-16 jets against India in violation of the end-user agreement. The Pakistani General noted that Islamabad was discussing the use of its JF-17 with the US citing “friendly relations” with Washington, stressing, however, that the country would use whatever it deemed necessary if it came to “legitimate self-defence.” PTI
